Several companies now market pots made 100% from recycled consumer plastic waste (that goes into the yellow garbage bags) as opposed to industrial plastic waste. These pots are blue in colour to be easily distinguishable and cost less than various biodegradable pots.
The cycle involves separation, sorting, granulation and production. These light blue pots, given the name ‘Pöppelmann blue’, are easily distinguishable from other plastic pots on the market. A company spokesman said that many biodegradable pots do not perform well in automated production systems, they are more expensive and often degrade very slowly through composting. Of a deeper blue the range ‘Recover’ from Desch Plantpak was also on show, similarly produced from recycling of consumer waste plastic.
