Mebiol Inc. is a Japanese Company established in 1995 to commercialize the IMEC hydrogel membrane technology invented by Yuichi Mori, professor at Waseda University. The most recent internationally recognized award for innovative ideas and technologies in Agrobusiness was provided by UNIDO ITPO, Italy 2019 (United Nations Industrial Development Organization. Yet another example of the time it takes to develop and apply innovative products and systems in agriculture.
Plants roots grow on and into a thin hydrophylic membrane that allows the selective passage of water and nutrients from the underlying substrate or hydroponic system, but not bacteria, fungi and viruses. It is considered more portable than traditional hydroponic systems and plants are said to use 80% less water and significantly lower quantities of fertilizers than traditional soil cultivation. In the cultivation of tomatoes, the membrane creates water stress together with a reduction in biotic stress factors. This stimulates quality and productivity parameters: especially the increase in yield, sugars and lycopene. IMEC film has been successfully used in Dubai and is considered one of the important technologies with which to grow greenhouse food crops in the desert. See also the companies product Skygel.
