The Italian company Rain SpA, specialized in irrigation, in partnership with the Spanish startup Inolve, has been awarded an important European funding (Horizon 2020) for the substantial amount of 1.4 million euros. Rain SpA is one of two Italian companies to have obtained it: a total of 68 companies in Europe out of 1850 made applications.
The product to be marketed is called Fliwer (Rainolve) and is a system based on artificial intelligence for agricultural irrigation: thanks to multiple highly developed sensors, the use of the Cloud and an algorithm, this system should reduce water use between 20 and 80%. Fliwer EN
Another strong point of the system is the availability of a database which, based on local climatic conditions, calculates and controls the needs of each plant for water, light and fertilizers. By recognizing the exact needs of plants, the contribution of chemicals is also reduced. See Video also for the vegetable garden.
The economical return of Fliwer (Rainolve), according to the company, should be obtainable within one year only: according to their calculations it would allow a saving, between water and chemicals, of over € 19,000 per year. Rain forecasts for this product annual revenues of 9 million euros and the creation of 36 new jobs between Italy and Spain, besides the saving of 340 million m3 of water in Europe. The climatic context of Europe has certainly counted in awarding of the funding.
