Judging by the number of propagators and growers round the world now interested in Delosperma, the innovative multi-functional characteristics of the series ‘The Jewel of Desert’ from Flosaika are finding even greater popularity: flexibility of use (from hobby gardening to ground cover landscaping), low maintenance, hardiness, bright radiant colours with long and continued flowering. Plants are drought tolerant and need full sunlight. flowering from early spring through to the first frosts, hardy down to -15°C (like most Delosperma species).
Koichiro Nishikawa started his breeding work in Japan on this succulent plant over 20 years ago, aiming to lengthen the flowering period and hardiness. The Flosaika Breeding Company, is now based in Holland and the Delosperma breeding work is done in Ecuador because of the favourable climate. The new series of eleven varieties represents an important addition to the already well-known series ‘Wheels of Wonder’ that won a silver medal at the Green Expo, Sydney 2014.
